Details:
POG are a European Improvising trio in the Jazz tradition consisting of Penrose Feast, UK (saxes), Oli Sonntag, Germany (drums and cymbals) and Girogi Kiknadze, Georgia (double-bass).
POG''s début release is an intense mixture of the traditional and the modern, all boiled up and infused with enthusiasm and an obvious passion to make a sweet and contemporary Jaz-Gumbo that will have you dashing back to the pot to dip your bread again and again.
FROM THE INVISIBLE SLEEVENOTES:
"After a rather intense portion of the 2nd days recording double-bassist Giorgi made a suggestion, "Shall we do a ballad?" Penrose replied, "Yeah sure, but which one?" And Oli pipped up, "Shall we just make one up?" And so they did! When the music had drawn to its natural conclusion, there was a surprisingly lengthy pause, the three looked at each other, and Goirgi said, with a cheeky grin, "Free Jazz for Lovers?" All laughed out loud and decided this would be the tracks title, and eventually the title track. This is the first, last and only take there will ever be, or can ever be of this tune."
THE SOUNDS OF FREE JAZZ FOR LOVERS:
(tracklist)
The instigations,
The inspirations,
The representations,
And the dedications...
1. BACKCRAKER BOOGIE - Feast [5:37]
Dedicated to Karl, osteopathic genius, for giving Penrose a new lease of life.
2. PINAN NIDAN: KATA & BUNKAI - Feast [1:45]
Pinan Nidan is the first set form in the Wadu-Ryu system of Karate. First of all there is the warm up, then the Kata, and finally the punch-up! As in most martial arts encounters it''s all over pretty quickly!
3. SAINTIFIED - Feast [2:28] sound snippet available
A devotional number, dedicated to the mavericks and geniuses of jazz - past and present.
4. THE LONELY FISH - Feast [4:32]
Inspired by the children''s story of the same name.
5. KALYX - Feast [5:14]
When Penrose''s daughter was three she had an imaginary dog; a chocolate-brown Labrador called Kalyx - he was quite a bit of a handful!
6. FREE JAZZ FOR LOVERS - POG [4:28]
This is the first and only take there will ever be of this tune, which was accidentally improvised on the spot at the end of a recording session.
7. SWINDON SHOWTUNE - Feast [4:50]
An upbeat celebration of one of the most happening and dynamic places in Britain today.
8. DOIN'' THE ROOSTER - POG [5:08]
From start to finish this tune took less than 20 minutes to write and record. The title is a reference to Mick Jagger''s distinctive style - give it a go!
9. STILL MARCHING - Feast [4:35]
Hiding in the long shadows of the great saxophone stylists of the past.
10. OLD MOONLIGHT - POG [4:11]
Like luxury toilet paper, soft and strong and reassuringly decadent.
11. THE LONELY FISH - Feast [6:20]
An expression of the primoris calyx of Jazz...
