Althouse has been the Music Director and accompanist for the Saint Cloud Presbyterian Chancel Choir for six years. The church has a well-established tradition of supporting choral music. The Chancel Choir traditionally has successfully performed the major works of David Clydesdale, Tom Fettke, and many others. While there, Althouse has modernized its repertoire and expanded the use of orchestral and jazz musicians to support the choir’s two musicals a year.
As an educator, Althouse has been teaching piano, brass, and vocal lessons for over twenty years. He began teaching at The Fame Conservatory in Youngstown, Ohio, and The Warren Music Center in Warren, Ohio. While in Florida he taught at Mars Music in Orlando, The Music Shack in Casselbury, Florida and currently teaches at Jammers Music Center in Saint Cloud, Florida.
Althouse’s primary interest in music has been in the Jazz idiom. While at Youngstown State University as a trombone major he studied jazz improvisation, jazz arranging, and jazz piano. He played the solo chair for four years in the Youngstown State University Jazz Ensemble I. In addition, he played trombone and euphonium in the Youngstown State University Wind Ensemble, Concert and Marching Bands, and trombone in the Ohio State All Star Jazz Band. Also, while in college he began playing gospel music at St. Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church in Youngstown, Ohio. He has shown an affinity for gospel music ever since. During his time in Ohio he began playing in Youngstown area big bands and combos on a regular basis.
While attending the University of Central Florida Althouse is completing mastery of jazz piano, vocals, and entertains hopes of completing the requirements for a valid educator’s certificate. He will graduate in May, 2009.
