Discs 6 & 7 of the Composer Portrait Series were taken from live performances during 1999 Radical PAST, a collaboration between the Norton Simon Museum, Art Center College of Design, One Colorado, Armory Center for the Arts and Southwest Chamber Music. Honoring the history of the Pasadena Art Museum and its Encounters Series, the accompanying booklet includes a complete list of the composers that appeared on this legendary series directed by Schoenberg disciple Leonard Stein. The disc features the "maverick" composer’s of California, John Cage, Lou Harrison, and Harry Partch.
Cage’s Atlas Eclipticalis is performed with Southwest Chamber Music and students from John Muir High School, part of the ensemble’s acclaimed Mentorship Program. Lou Harrison’s eternally resonant Suite for Violin & American Gamelan receives an energetic performance with violinist Amy Sims and Harrison devotee John Bergamo conducting the CalArts Gamelan Ensemble. Harry Partch "reconstructionist" John Schneider performs Partch’s 8 Hitchhiker Inscriptions from a Highway Railing at Barstow, California in its original 1941 version, using Schneider’s own adapted guitar. Cage’s Lecture on the Weather, intended for 12 men preferably who left America for Canada during the Vietnam War, is perhaps one of the greatest testaments to the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements of the 1960s.
