The Story of Rider on the Rim
As TEXAS was being dreamed about in the minds of Margaret Harper, William and Margaret Moore and others, one of the images that kept finding its way into the conversations was that of the lone cowboy, standing solitary against the huge expanse of panhandle sky. It wasn’t much of a leap of imagination to envision that cowboy silhoutted against an evening sky, high atop the cliff wall that isthe backdrop for the Pioneer Amphitheatre. And so, the most iconic moment in American outdoor drama was born. 45 years later, when TEXAS Executive Director Bill Anderson asked me why I had never written a song for the amphitheater, I was shocked to find that I had no answer. It never occurred to me that a place which honors so many, would need honoring itself. But, of course, it does. And when I started thinking about what this place and this show have meant to me and to countless others, the image which came immediately to mind was the soaring symbol of “the cliff rider”. I can’t count the number of nights I’ve stood looking at that image, yet it never fails to quicken my heart a beat or two. The rider pictured on our cover, David Schuette, was a friend of mine. Not only a fine actor, but a true cowboy, “Schuette” inspired everyone he met, both personally and professionally. To him and the dozens of other fearless men and women who braved dark, unmarked trails, rock slides, and recalcitrant mounts to live forever in our hearts as a symbol of strength, hope, courage and pride - this song and this CD are dedicated.

About "TEXAS"
Although known universally simply as “TEXAS”, the official name of the best attended outdoor drama in the United States is the TEXAS Musical Drama. Not only is the word “Music” central to the show’s name, but it has always been central to the hearts and minds of those involved with it. From the very beginning, there was as much Music in the amphitheatre as there was Drama.
The performances on this CD represent the variety of music which has been associated with TEXAS over the years. From the earliest recordings in the 60s to the world premiere “Rider on the Rim” written just for the Amphitheatre, these
tracks are a tribute, and a legacy, to and from the men and women who made the Music of TEXAS.
From 2002-2004, the outreach and educational arm of TEXAS entertained thousands of theatre-goers, students, conventioneers and congressmen throughout Texas and the southwest. Directed by Steve Hilton and made up of some of the most outstanding performers from the TEXAS Musical Drama, the group combined storytelling, original and traditional song, dance and spectacle, and left a legacy of song which continues to entertain. Many of the performances included here have never before been released on CD, and are
from live performances at venues ranging from the Brauntex Theatre in New Braunfels, to the Fair Theatre in Plainview, to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, to the stage of the Pioneer Amphitheatre itself.
