"Stories of Musica"- inspired by Ilia Ehrenburg''s "Thirteen Pipes"- About the album
My grandmother gave me Ilia Ehrengurg''s book, "Thirteen Pipes" when I was a teenager. Two small volumes, with thirteen stories, each one telling the tale of one pipe, its owners and twists of fate, have formed a deep impression and stayed with me ever since. I returned to this innocent, romantic book again and again over the years.
Each one of the tracks in this album was inspired by one of the stories. Just like Ehrengurg''s book, I wanted the music to be emotional, romantic, sometimes theatrical, but most of all I wanted it to remind me of young 15 year old Razi, reading late at night in his room this book by a Jewish-Russian author, and convinced that a pipe is the most magical object in the entire world.
Or, in Ehrenburg''s own words: "--I am fond of sentimentality, and not ashamed of it. I cannot stand the cold hearted. True love lies much more in the eyes of the old, loyal yard dog, than in the cold, lifeless stone gaze of Eros, the god of love--"
All the tracks were composed, played and recorded by me, except the violin and cello parts, played by Isabel Candice (courtesy of SFE college quartet), and several drum parts played by James Richardson. Backup vocals: Tirza Ben-Ezzer. Brian Campbell participated in musical production.
Inspiration by: Brahms, Liszt, Celtic music, Pink Floyd of course, Ravel, Bartok, Motown, Fat Boys, John Cale, Gryphon
