ELECTRONIC: Ambient, ELECTRONIC: Soundscapes
Details:
In 1997 Morgan Guberman and Chuck Ehlis recorded a series of ambient soundscapes live to DAT. Both - excellent improvisers from Oakland, California-use slide guitar, bass, voice and homemade instruments together with some electronics to create fascinating loops with overlays of their instruments, all played live, no overdubs. The tracks are audio snapshots without editing afterward.
The result are soundscapes inhabited by shifting textures, stark emotions and joyous interplay. You can hear long calm sequences without percussion, sometimes it reminds one of the ambient soundscapes of Brian Eno. But also loop clicks are used to create a kind of rhythm and some exciting bizarre structures enrich this unusual release.
It''s an album made for gourmets, who prefer exotic unusual music. It''s not the kind of sweet new age you often hear in radio.
Both musicians already released several albums. Morgan Guberman offers another release as soloist here at CD Baby (CD "hamadryas baboon") as well as Chuck Ehlis as a member of Sandbox Trio (CDs "Kurumba", "Idiophone/Orcus Drawl", "Nocturnalis").
Tragically Chuck was hit by a car and died much too early in January 2000. He was only 38 years old.
