Concert pianist Peter Allen has continually delighted audiences with his power, poetry, and entirely engaging artistry. This versatile artist has performed concertos with orchestras, solo recitals, chamber music, and children’s concerts across the country. He is frequently broadcast over CBC Radio regionally and nationally. For many years he has been a regular performer with the “Music on the Hill” Concert Series at UNB Fredericton, the Scotia Festival of Music, Symphony New Brunswick, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the St. Cecilia Concert Series. Peter has also performed in most communities in the Maritimes, to rave reviews and standing ovations.
He is Professor of Piano in the Department of Music at Dalhousie University and is also an active composer, having fulfilled commissions from various concert presenters, including his Haligonian Rhapsody for Two Pianos, commissioned by St. Cecilia Concert Series in 2000. In 2001, his Mar Atlantico for Orchestra received its world premiere in Mexico City with the New World Orchestra who commissioned the work. Symphony Nova Scotia performed this work to critical acclaim at the National Arts Centre in April, 2002, and again in Nova Scotia January 11, 2005, recorded by the CBC. Suite for Clarinet and Strings received its world premiere in August, 2004 at the New Brunswick Summer Music Festival. The Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra commissioned Variations on the Halifax Explosion which was premiered in 2004 and this composition of Peter’s was the sole musical finalist for the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Masterwork Award. His String Quartet was premiered in 2006 at Scotia Festival of Music to a spontaneous standing ovation.
On September 27, 2008, Peter as soloist will premiere his new Piano Concerto titled Hurricane Juan. This composition is a CBC commission and will be performed under the baton of Bernhard Gueller and Symphony Nova Scotia. It will be broadcast by CBC on the actual date of the 5th year anniversary of Juan’s assault on Halifax.
Peter’s compact discs include an all-Haydn solo CD, three chamber CD’s with flutist Patricia Creighton, and a disc of piano miniatures including a series of his own Bagatelles. His next solo compact disc will be available soon and includes Mussorgsky''s Pictures at an Exhibition and the Brahms Handel Variations.
Peter has also discovered a love for conducting which he has been doing more of in the past number of years.
Before winning the position of Associate Professor of Piano at Dalhousie’s Department of Music, Peter was Artist in Residence for four years at the University of New Brunswick’s Centre for the Performing Arts, at Fredericton. Before that, he taught piano at Acadia University and St. Xavier University. He was staff accompanist at the Banff Centre of Performing Arts previous to his return to the Maritimes in 1993.
Peter has a BMUS from Mount Allison University, and a Masters of Music in Performance from Yale University.
