Details:
A largely unknown saxophonist, San Francisco native Liam Furey began playing the clarinet at an early age 9 and soon switched to the saxophone. He learned to play through the SF public school system and organized jazz ensembles. His early influences usually included band teachers and recordings of John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon.
Through his 20''s he played with several local SF bands including a middle-eastern belly-dance style band, Nazar, and salsa/funk bands, Manicato and Sangano. He attended the Jazz school in Berkeley, Ca and studied under mentor bassist Glenn Richman.
Matthew Furey started working on an independent documentary called Street Poet five years ago and asked his brother to compose and arrange a soundtrack for the film. The documentary chronicles the life and artwork of San Francisco Poet Laureate Jack Hirchsman. The project came at a perfect time for the tenor saxophonist. Concepts Liam had been cultivating for several years had found a medium through which they could be expressed.
The first portion of Red Poet album champion''s a post-bop style giving way to a more electric and modern interpretation of where Liam would have liked the style to evolve to. A sensitive and powerful collection of pieces, Red Poet features prominent Bay Area musicians such as Jacob Aginsky on piano, Jon Evans on bass, Ara Anderson on trumpet and Adam Theis of The Realistic Orchestra on trombone. Red Poet is an impressive debut album and more will definitely be expected from the tenor saxophonist.
People who are interested in John Coltrane Miles Davis Dexter Gordon should consider this download.
