Chris Blacker, pianist and winner of the 2006 ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards, has released his first full-length album. Entitled “Out of Chaos,” the album features eight original compositions, ranging from the orchestral drama of the title track, to the driving jazz/rock sound of “Burning,” to the angular and complex rhythms of “Tidal.” The music is sophisticated but accessible, sonically exploring themes of loss, longing, the search for one''s identity, and eventual celebration.
The dizzying variety of influences in the album are given cohesion by the strong playing of Chris Blacker’s Quartet, which features Charlie Smith on the saxophones, Jeff Busch on the drums, and Cody Rahn on the bass. Additional players on the album include Seattle mainstay Hans Teuber on the woodwinds, Jakob Breitbach on the violins, and Brendan Kellogg on the cellos.
