Columbus singer/songwriter Rj Cowdery has been singing and writing songs since she was a teenager. This is a labor of love — from playing open mics to sharing the stage with some of todays most outstanding singers and writers.
In 2007 Rj was a co-winner of The Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, one of North America’s premier showcases of emerging performing songwriters. The contest finals were held in NYC and was part of a summer long process of live regional rounds held in some of the best listening rooms across the United States and Canada.
Most recently, Rj has been selected as a finalist (held on May 23 & 24, 2008) in the prestigious Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Festival held in Kerrville Texas. Founded by Rod Kennedy, the Kerrville Folk Festival has run annually since 1972. It is the longest continuously running music festival of its kind in North America. The Festival is known internationally as a Mecca for singer songwriters of varying musical style.
Rj has been influenced by some of the great singer-song writers of our time; from Nanci Griffith, Carol King, and John Denver to Jackson Browne, Jim Croce and Neil Young…to name a few. Rj writes about what she sees in life. Her songs are simple and direct. The subject matter is personal and close to heart. She gives the listener a chance to get to know her as if privy to a secret that she is letting you in on.
In 1995, Cowdery recorded "Bernie''s Daughter" and developed a strong regional following. She also contributed a cut to the “ripe!” compilation made up of singer/songwriters from the Columbus, Ohio area. After a career in health care Rj has returned to music with her latest effort, "One More Door”, released in February, 2008.
"One More Door" was recorded live in Parkersburg, West Virginia with Michael Lipton and Ammed Solomon from Public Radio International’s Mountain Stage Band and Don Dixon, singer, songwriter, musician and legendary producer of REM and Marshall Crenshaw. West Virginia singer-songwriter icon Todd Burge produced the album.
