Details:
Growing up, Native American music, especially drums, rattles and chants were a part of my culture. So was being a warrior. From the age, of five, I began studying the Marine Corp style of Martial Arts with my father Grayhawk. I learned music from my Uncle Guy Many Horses and my Grandfather Two Feathers. I was the lead singer in a Garage Rock band when I was sixteen. But, at the age of twenty-two, the call of fighting led me to professional kickboxing. This took me on a journey covering 54 professional fights and culminating in winning Four World Kickboxing Titles and earning an 8th Degree Black Belt in Karate. But music was always inside my heart and soul. In November 2007, my first CD/Album ‘Cowboy Up’ reached #124 on Independent Record Charts as the most played Country Artist Internationally.
This new album is one I produced. I wanted the music to reflect who I really am. Growing up Native American in the rural south and then later moving out west greatly influenced my life and music. So this CD is who I am, an eclectic mix of Native American songs, Country songs and Southern Rock.
One of the things that drives me crazy is when you hear this great lead singer or this great band, but every song sounds the same. You won’t hear this on my CD. Each song I sing is in a different key from low baritone to high tenor. On the American Indian songs I used the traditional Indian drums, the Native American flute, and added guitars and keyboards to give a mystical element to the songs.
On each song I added my own personal touch. On ‘Lodi’ John Fogerty was a California boy trying to sound like he was from the Cajun Bayou. I never thought the way he sang it fit the words for the feel the song needed. So I sang it much more melancholy than he did. One thing is for sure. I’m a southern boy. Paul Revere and the Raiders recorded “Indian Reservation” in 1971 and it was a #1 hit in 27 countries. I loved the song but again I wanted to create a different version. I recorded it with all the same instruments they used plus the Native American Flute and Indian rattles. Now when you hear the words they are not sung pretty and happy but with anger and resentment just like the meaning the words represent on paper. You’ll also like the subtle little things I did on all the songs and some will catch you by surprise. I know you will like this album if you are a music lover, because you can feel each and every song and you get to know the real Blackhawk.
