Details:
Organist Ronnie Williams played his first gig when he was just sixteen years old, backing R&B sax man Johnny London on Beale Street. An insurance salesman by day, Williams was a regular on the local soul scene at night, playing private parties and pick-up gigs when he wasn’t hanging out in the studio.
At Stax, Williams played on, wrote and produced dozens of notable tracks. The list reads like a whos-who in Soul – Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, David Porter, Sir Mack Rice, the Bar-Kays, Johnny Taylor, the Staple Singers, Johnny London and the Rockets, the Rance Allen Group, and Ben Cauley, to name just a few.
One of the first African-Americans to graduate from the University of Memphis’ music program, Ronnie is currently a musical director at his church. Recently, he’s backed Stax songwriter Sir Mack Rice on stage, and in the studio with the sultry-voiced Carla Thomas on her Live In Memphis album.
Art means more than just music! Several years ago Ronnie started painting as a means of therapy after a motorcycle accident, and it blossomed into something that is as magical as his music.
