Randy Simon is a physicist living in upstate New York who moonlights as a jazz composer. In “Suspended Motion”, he has gathered a quartet of top-flight musicians from the Albany area for a spirited session of new tunes.
Adrian Cohen has been voted Best Pianist by Upstate New York''s Metroland Magazine two years consecutively (2000-2001), and The Adrian Cohen Quartet was voted Best Jazz Ensemble by the same magazine in 2002 and 2005.
Adrian was voted “Best Jazz Musician” by the same publication for their 2006 Best Of issue. His trio is featured on the CD “Standardized”. He is currently recording music for a new CD to be released during 2008.
Lee Russo is an accomplished saxophonist and the son of Leo Russo who is also a saxophonist and a longtime Albany legend. He studied with saxophonist Bob Faub at the Crane School of Music and worked in master classes/clinics with guest artists Donald Sinta, Hal Galper, Jerry Bergonzi, The New York Hardbop Quintet, Kenny Wheeler and Dave Demsey. Currently, Lee works regularly with Joe Barna''s group, and leads his own trio with Lou Smaldone on bass and Joe Barna on drums. He can be heard on his two CDs: “Trading Off” and “The Abenaki.”
Drummer Danny Whelchel spent the majority of his life in Lafayette, Louisiana before moving to upstate New York in the fall of 1997. Since then he has performed with a variety of musicians including Charles Neville, John Mengon, Teri Roiger, Tessa Souter, Evita Cobo, Ray Alexander, Adrian Cohen, Soul Session, Carl Landa, Amy Abdou, Jeff Gonzales, Nicole Peyrafitte, Bob Warren, Michael Jerling, Jocamo, Pangaea, Out Of Control, and the Refrigerators.
Saratoga, NY-based bassist Mike DelPrete studied bass at Skidmore College with Rich Syracuse and was a member of a Downbeat Award winning student ensemble. DelPrete earned a MFA degree in composition from Bennington College where he studied with Allen Shawn, Nick Brooke and Milford Graves. DelPrete is currently a faculty member at the National Guitar Workshop and an adjunct faculty member at Bennington College. He maintains an active performance schedule with a variety of musicians throughout the Northeast.
In “Suspended Motion”, this talented group plays a set of Randy Simon’s tunes including several Latin jazz numbers, a modern bebop tune and some post-bop styled music reminiscent of 60’s era Herbie Hancock.
