Details:
“Martín y Martínez,” aka “Dueto Internacional,” has been performing professionally throughout California and in various cities in Mexico since the 1980’s. They play and sing in various groups including Grupo Tropical and El Mariachi Los Caltecas de Alta California and they are also able to explain and demonstrate, both the musical style and the cultural context, bilingually.

The lead singer, Andrea Martinez, performed for ten years in Spain, Japan, and the United States as the lead dancer in one of the most highly respected flamenco companies in the world. She also teaches History and Dance at Garfield High School in Los Angeles, California. In addition, she plays vihuela, guitarra and Latin percussion.

After taking his Ph.D. at UCLA, Dr. David Kilpatrick Martín developed the Ethnomusicology Program at the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he taught for 14 years. He was a Fulbright Scholar to Greece in 1980 and has completed five years of field research throughout the world. He has directed and performed internationally with El Mariachi Los Caltecas since 1972. He plays 18 different instruments on this cd, including Greek buzuki, Russian balalaika, acordión, and the instruments of the mariachi and bluegrass ensembles.

The Recording “Crossing the Border”

The fourteen tracks include 20 songs, from 12 different styles, sung in Portuguese, French, Greek and Russian, as well as Spanish and English. Most of these songs are well known both in Mexico and the United States and the cross-cultural influences are remarkable. New arrangements and translations are introduced with the utmost concern for the 200 years of tradition from which the music is drawn. These songs have a long, exciting history on both sides of the border and are appropriate for a lively Latin party, a cabaret night club, or a concert stage. The fresh, vibrant, romantic music is the result of years of immersion in the age old traditions that remain very relevant to our modern lives, and, they are all danceable.
