Kirk Vernon releases his debut CD "THE TALLGRASS"
As a self taught singer/songwriter hoping to improve his craft in the fall of 2005 Kirk Vernon decided he was going to attempt to teach himself to play piano. He felt this would be a compliment to his playing guitar and finally force himself to learn to read music.
Shortly after the purchase of his piano his father fell ill suffering a series of strokes. Richard "Dick" Vernon ultimately passed in January of 2006.
In February 2006 Kirk found a portion of a song in what his friends had affectionately dubbed his "man music purse" penned God knows when and was struck by the content. He immediately sat down and completed the song "I Just Keep Hoping" which always strikes powerful emotions for anyone who has ever lost someone they truly loved.
Shortly thereafter he approached two long time friends Gary McKnight and Doug Byers of the 80''s and 90''s nationally touring acts The Dialtones and The Love Squad respectivley to inquire if they would be willing to assist him with creating a CD of his songs written from present day to back to the early 90''s when he first started playing and writing music. Remarkabley to him they accepted.
The trio spent the summer of 2006 arranging and preparing to go into the studio and began recording in earnest in the Fall of 06. The trio then collaborated with regional artists Keith Broxterman, Leo Posch, and Ed Faris to complete the instrumentation necessary for the project and thus "The Tallgrass" was born
Any artist who has recorded a project on a part time basis with their friends knows the pitfalls involved and I won’t bore you with the details, but let’s just say Kirk''s timetable and reality were two entirely different things. The long story short at nearly twice the timetable, and twice the expense Kirk''s project is finally complete.
The CD arrived from the manufacturer Friday April 4th, 2008 and is best described as a contemporary folk-country-Americana kind of thing. The music included is all penned by Kirk Vernon and in one way or another is based upon some real life experience or observation. Kirk would appreciate hearing any thoughts or comments you may have, and would appreciate even more your reasonings behind those thoughts or comments. To contact Kirk directly;
