very track on this CD is piece of passion. Some pieces are very old, and some are quite new, but each one of them is something I play with the sort of intensity I''ve grown to love in my own guitar style. Bach Riff is built around an old Bach lute piece, but done in a much more modern style. Aphrodite''s Smile is about love, humor and beauty. Greensleeves is a very old madrigal which I''ve reworked for a modern age. Driftwood (one of my favorites on the album) is an original piece, built around Mideastern styles and rhythms.
Mari''s Wedding is a fiddle tune I adapted for guitar. Dos Minutos is a short Flamenco-style bit which I wrote originally for classical guitar when I was in conservatory. Cities on Fire was written in the short time before the US invaded Iraq, and holds great meaning for me. Off the Beaten Path uses the melody from an old tune, "The Road to Listdoonvarna," but is reworked here in a different rhythmic pattern. 500 Miles is also built around an old theme, but goes in its own directions.
The Long, Strange Trip reminds me of some of the Grateful Dead music I used to listen to a few years ago and gets me thinking about how much so many things can change in life. I guess it''s about journeys, pathways, and new ideas. Finally, Amazing Grace is my own rendering of an extremely well-known tune. It may seem strange for a pantheistic Wiccan to choose to perform a Christian spiritual piece, but I don''t think that this is so relevant. Faith, from my point of view, is a fundamentally personal thing, and the song has great meaning, regardless of the specific religion it espouses.
