CHIEMI NAKAI
PIANIST/ COMPOSER/ ARRANGER
CHIEMI NAKAI began studying the organ as a child at the Yamaha Music School of Japan. She composed her first shorts songs at the age of nine. Having always had a strong desire to compose music, she decided to study piano when she was in her early teens and eventually became interested in jazz. From there it was a steady progression from Bop to Brazilian music and then Salsa. After her talents were recognized by jazz hard bop drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath she was encouraged and soon invited to join Mamborama the most well known Latin jazz/ Salsa group in Osaka at the time. This led her to gigs with members of other influential Latin and jazz groups in Japan, including La Orquestra de la Luz. Wanting to take her career to the next level, she moved to New York City and was accepted to the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, where she graduated with a Masters of Art in Jazz Performance in 2002. Since then, she continues to perform, record and tour with some of Latin music’s premier artists and groups leading to the formation of The Afro-Cuban Jazz Project.
EMMANUEL "MANU" BIZEAU
PERCUSSIONIST
EMMANUEL BIZEAU began studying Latin percussion at the age of 17. Seeking advanced instruction, he spent three years in Cuba studying under many of the master Cuban percussionists of the time, including Miguel Valdez Aballi of the Emiliano Salvador Group, Conrado “Coqui” Garcia, Jose Luis Ramos of Cubanismo and Alberto Villareal, musical director of Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba. Upon returning to France, he made a name for himself performing and recording with major players of the Latin scene in Paris, including Zumbadera, Marseille Caracas, Iluyenkori and a host of others. Now based in New York City, Manu is a well established player in the city’s Latin music scene and most recently the recipient of a professional endorsement from the world market leader in percussion instrument manufacturing, LP (Latin Percussions).
