Following the release of "Dancing", big sleep. was approached by a major label. They went back into the studio and made this 4 track demo. It was the pinnacle of the bands creative endeavors. It marked their graduation from 80s teenage angst to grown up adult disillusionment and awareness. They were highly experimental in their techniques. They sang through junior practice amps on which they had punctured the speaker cones. They played guitars through amps and miked them into secondary and tertiary amps to magnify the stomp distortion. And everything was turned up to 10. They put ambient mikes all over the room to capture the whiskey soaked ambience. This kind of project does not come easy. It is labored over like an unmedicated birth. These guys dropped their pants and spread themselves wide for all to see, judge and experience.
Any intelligent, sensitive, aware or enlightened rock fan should not miss this demo project. These guys were way ahead of their time. Way ahead. And this was all happening in the back woods of Oklahoma in late 1989. Seminole to be exact. This thing was recorded in the upstairs loft of a carpet store on main street. They had to practice and record after hours to keep the cops away.
Dustin Carpenter penned most of the lyrics. This tortured soul went where few dare. He bared his being and bore the consequences. He risked his psyche. He threw his pearls before the swine. Witness the brutal, exquisite vulnerability of a nun finding awareness and enlightenment through masturbation in "Sometimes She Cums (Sister Mary)". Or experience the forward looking fear of a young man desperate not to live a "Life in Vain". Feel the terror and excruciating pain while you listen to these guys perform about "Touching the Wound". You get the point. These guys were on the edge, bearing their tortured souls and putting it all out there for you to witness. Don''t take this experience lightly. It is a serious connection to some fantastically spiritual guys.
