Súnas (pronounced Soo-nas) was put together in February of ’98, after about three years of talking about it. Most of the members have been in other bands in the past, some of them quite successful, other not, and all have known each other for ages. It wasn’t until everyone''s separate bands went their own way at the end of ’97 , that the oft-talked about idea actually became a reality.
Súnas was formed with no specific ideas in mind. The general consensus was to just play and see what happened. Of course we had a few guidelines; there was to be no ‘plastic paddy’ music, and most important of all, it was to be fun. We wanted the band to be different from the gaggle of other ‘Celtic’ groups out there at the time, so we chose songs and tunes that are not generally heard. Of course there are familiar ones in there, but in everything we have tried to put our own mark on it. Instruments played by the band include guitars, bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle, flutes, whistles and bodhrán, and we have the luxury of three vocalists.
