Details:
The debut cd from Philadelphia native John Sterling, "You Shall Not Be Missed", consists of ten Sterling originals featuring John and his band of the last two years, The Essmen. The band on the album consists of Sterling (voice), Matt McCann (guitar), Jason Stolnis (bass), and Corey Mark (drums). All tracks were recorded and produced by Matt McCann and Jason Stolnis at Abnormous Records Studios, South Philadelphia, from November ''05 through December ''07. The original line-up is still intact, recently augmented by the addition of guitarist Brian Seiple. The band headlined this past March 12th at the renowned Tin Angel and have recently appeared at Tritone, PhilaFunk Live, and Khyber. The release party for the album will be held at Fergie''s Pub in Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, April 13th at 8PM with local faves, King of Siam, opening.
The music, on record and in concert, is difficult to categorize. Like America itself, it is a melting pot of many different styles and genres; blending into it''s own unique, yet completely recognizable creature. One may hear strains of old country-western mixed with early American punk, jazz, and psychedelic rock. Yet another might hear old folk songs tinged with garage, British new-wave, and rockabilly. All of these descriptions and more are correct. The lyrics and vocals are as much a driving force as the instrumentation on the album; upfront, and uniquely presented without overdubs or backing. There is a starkness here that is ofttimes chilling.
John Sterling & the Essmen are currently working on their second album, and touring in support of "You Shall Not Be Missed".
