Less Nessman returns with their sophomore album, Nevertheless. There are eight new studio tracks varying from pop to rock, and even some hints of jazz. The band stays consistent with its sound, but the textures and layers have broadened since 2004’s debut, Bird’s Eye View.
Vocalist Naomi Less gives a bold performance in “I Choose Now,” a song with a prayer for spiritual growth. “Fill the Faith,” is a yearning ballad for grief’s closure. Throughout the album Naomi layers infectious harmonies which enhance the already addictive melodies.
Lead Guitarist Adam Stein summons a heavenly band in “Soundhole,” with a tribute to several noted guitarists who have passed on. In “Texas Skyline,” his lyrics describe the feeling of dusk – raw yet sentimental. Throughout the album Adam''s guitar lines sing call and response to Naomi''s emotive vocals.
Long-time stand-in bassist, Edwin Alvarado, lays in a solid foundation, most noted in the complexity of “Odds Are.” In “Picture,” his bass runs are brilliant and smooth.
The album closes with live acoustic tracks where Naomi and Adam as a duo heat it up, interweaving guitar rhythms and licks on two selections from their previous album.
Nevertheless was recorded at Forever Studios in New York City. It was engineered and mixed by David Aaron with Adam and Naomi producing. Glenn Grossman produced several of Naomi''s vocal tracks and associate produced on a couple of selections.
Photography for the album was shot in and near the Brooklyn Promenade by Tatiana McCabe. Mastering was done by Kurt Upper who also mastered the band’s first album.
The production throughout the album is creative and playful, making for an excellent listen to those who like to be uplifted while singing along.
