Palomino Diaz
Palomino was born on January 3, 1948, in the province of Pinar del Rio
on the island of Cuba. His family, like many Cuban families, loved
music and he grew up listening to popular music of the 40''s and 50''s
like Frank Sinatra, Pat Boone, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, and the
great Cuban singer/ band leader Beny More. He became fascinated
with songwriting and began teaching himself to play guitar as a child.
Although Palomino did not study music formally, as a teenager he was
admitted to Cuba''s prestigious Escuela Nacional de Arte (National Art
School) in the acting program. After playing an extra in Tomas
Gutierrez Alea''s masterpiece film, "Las Doce Sillas (The Twelve
Chairs), he knew that acting was not for him and focused his attention
on guitar playing and songwriting. Fellow pinareƱo (person from Pinar
del Rio), Pepe Besu, was his guitar teacher and within one month told
his student that he was born with the gift and played as if he had
been playing for years. Palomino completed his first musical
composition at the age of 13. Having always been a prolific
songwriter, from 1972, the year of the Cuba''s first "Festival del Joven
Creador (Young Creator''s Festival), he began to submit songs to all of
the Cuban songwriting and creative competitions. Through the mid
1980s, Palomino won 10 of Cuba''s most important national
songwriting competitions making a name for himself, especially
among his peers all of whom consider Palomino to be one of
his generation''s greatest composers.
In 1997 Palomino left Cuba for the United States, arriving in Miami
where he began to try his luck at making a name for himself among
the music community. After some time and some disappointments,
but with the eternal optimism reflected in his beautiful songs, he
began to play at a popular Coral Gables venue frequented by many
stars of the Latin Music industry. There he was admired by and often accompanied artists such as Lucia Mendez, Ana Barbara, Son by Four
and many others, but it was the legendary jazz flutist Nestor Torres
who took notice and brought him to the attention of composer,
arranger and music producer, Will Edwards. Will Edwards, owner
of Sprockets Music, successful audio production and post production
facility, fell in love with Palomino''s songs, his unique style of guitar
playing and his voice, and decided to produce Palomino''s first record.
Palomino Diaz''s first CD, "Ese Soy Yo", featuring guest artists Nicolle
Chirino, Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres and Jose Negroni, will be
released March 14, 2006.
