Lisa''s Bio:

Lisa Sedlacek-Marcum grew up in a very musical household. Her mother, Melba, introduced all five children to the piano. Verdi and Melba Sedlacek provided a thorough Christian education and musical education for all of the children. There were many sacrifices in order to provide both for five children.

As Lisa’s sisters and brother practiced their advanced literature her passion for music was recognized. Oftentimes she would crawl onto the bench after a sibling had practiced and mimic their performances with reproduced melodies played by ear. Her mother and siblings shared their musical knowledge as Lisa repetitively asked for more music lessons. Her fifth birthday present was the most significant in her life: she would finally have formal classical piano instruction with the beloved Eleanor M. Haney!

The next 12 years were fulfilling and full. Lisa won the overall award for the Mid Columbia Young Artist Competition at the age of 7 performing her first concerto: Haydn’s Concerto in C. This first performance with the symphony was thrilling and impactful…definitely one of her most treasured musical experiences! The Sedlacek family was raised knowing all gifts received were from God and they were to be shared. As Lisa continued to compete, concertize and eventually teach (her piano studio began with 7 students in the 7th grade) she continued to share her gifts in church, at school and in her community. She became a very active performer, accompanist and teacher.

In the 7th grade she also began studying with Margaret Saunders Ott, then on the faculty of Whitworth College in Spokane. Lisa was profoundly impacted by her piano educators and their faithfilled lives. They became some of the most important mentors in her life.

Lisa obtained her Bachelor of Music, Piano Performance Degree under the instruction of Bradford Gowen and Dr. Nelita True at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Again, she was blessed with time and expertise from two special people—not only professional concert pianists but also nationally acclaimed educators. She was the accompanist, a soprano and a piano soloist for the University of Md Chorale, Dr. Roger Folstrom – director. Yet again, Lisa’s life was imprinted by another educator who not only held a wealth of knowledge about music but an intentional love for God, his family and his students.

Shortly after graduation she married Marvin Marcum. She has been teaching a vibrant, active piano studio professionally since 1985. Her students continue to follow this handed-down heritage of music making in universities, schools, churches, retirement homes, etc. Lisa’s days have been filled these past years with wonderful family time with her husband and three children: Nicholas, Kurt and Janeczka. She has maintained several church positions over the years as pianist, worship leader and children’s music director. She regularly shares her expertise in the community and in the schools. The past two years she has also taught at The Enrichment Cooperative in Spokane. She continues to share her love for classical and sacred piano music with her students.

In 1996, Lisa was devastated by the deaths of her parents. She poured over Scripture and hymn texts. The gift of composition and arrangement was realized in the process. “On Eagles Wings” was arranged in response to her parents’ deaths. In the years following, her arrangements were shared consistently at Colbert Presbyterian Church in Spokane where she was Staff Pianist for 10 years. Lisa was enriched and inspired in worship by Pastor Eric E. Peterson, Lynn Peterson, Sharon Clegg, Betty Stratton and Dr. Benjamin Brody.

In 2005, Lisa was awarded her Lifetime Permanent Professional Certification for Piano Instruction through Music Teachers National Association. In partial fulfillment of the requirements for this certification, she composed 14 advanced sacred arrangements, presented them in concert and professionally recorded “Eucharisteo – I Am Thankful”. In 2007 “Proskuneo – I Worship” was composed, performed and recorded.
