Rio, born in Japan, began studying music at the age of six, and started to accompany her school choir. At sixteen, she entered a private music school in Fukuoka to continue her piano study. There her piano teacher noticed her vocal talent immediately and strongly suggested her to pursue a singing career.
Rio began singing professionally in various jazz clubs in Fukuoka, Japan in 1992.
Rio moved to Paris, France in August 1995 to study jazz vocal with Michele Hendricks, the daughter of Jon Hendricks. Soon she emerged into the Paris music scene. After moving back to Fukuoka City in Japan, her singing career took off, and performed extensively in the Fukuoka metropolitan area. In 1997 Rio won the golden prize at the Asakusa Jazz Festival Competition in Tokyo, Japan.
Rio moved to New York in 1998 and has since performed at major jazz venues such as the Lenox Lounge, Cleopatra’s Needle, . Other venues include Caravan of Dreams, Kavahaz, , Café San Marco, 169Bar, and ETC...
