Taurean started his life in pan as a nine year old in playing for a community steelband in 1990. Even at that age, he was a natural player. As a veteran of 18 years, he has played for numerous community groups within Toronto including Pan Vibrations, Oshawa Sounds of Steel, Panatics, and Silhouettes. He is the youngest community steelband arranger in Toronto with stints at Panatics and currently the Musical Director of Pan Vibrations. Also, he is currently, teaching steelpan programs within various public schools within Toronto.
As a soloist he has played at the Small World Music Festival with the group, Pantiki, in 2005. He has played at Toronto’s Pan Jazz and was part of the Ontario Steelpan Association All-Star group to Hong Kong for its New Year’s Parade, in 2004 & 2005. He is also a member of Legacy Pan Groove which features some of the best young Canadian born panists in the world. For the last 6 years, he has played at many Caribbean events within the Toronto, Durham, and Burlington areas.
The Taurean Clarke Quartet
The Taurean Clarke Quartet features Jasmine Jones on Drums, Tim Ball on E. Bass, and Hayoun Lee on Piano. The music is a fusion of jazz, calypso, reggae, Latin, and even pop music. The quartet has played at the Toronto Annual Pan Jazz in the summer of 2005 and at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival in 2007; also, the quartet has performed at various jazz venues within Toronto including at the Black Swan, the Concord Café, the Trane Studio, and at the Central. The debut CD, “A Pannist’s Dream”, came out in December 2006. The CD features many compositions by Taurean’s influences in music, including Robert Greenidge, Sakesho, his father, and John Legend; not to mention, the CD features some of Taurean’s original compositions. The steelpan has grown from its grass roots in the Caribbean and has grown in popularity within Europe and the United States. This CD serves as a Canadian voice to the growth of the language of the steelpan worldwide.
