MEMPHIS’S PREMIER HONKY TONK BAND RELEASES DEBUT DISC.
Papa Top records is pleased to announce the February release of Greatest Hits: Volume II, the debut recording from Memphis’s premier honky tonk band, the West Coast Turnaround. Recorded with noted local producer Kevin Cubbins (Cory Branan, Makeshift Records), Greatest Hits: Volume II features 11 original compositions that update the classic country sound for contemporary ears while still keeping things recognizable for fans of legends like Ray Price, Tammy Wynette, Hank Thompson, Johnny Cash, and Buck Owens.
To celebrate the release, the West Coast Turnaround will perform at a CD release party Friday, February 8th at the Hi-Tone Café, 1913 Poplar Ave. Besides playing the new record in its entirety, the band will perform other unrecorded original material as well as a selection of classic country favorites about drinking, fighting, cheating, trucking, and heartache. There will also be prize giveaways and special guests. Admission to the show is $10 and includes a complimentary copy of the CD.
Formed in 1999, the West Coast Turnaround quickly emerged as of the favored purveyors of the classic honky tonk sound in the Mid-South. The band has performed at most of Memphis’ major venues and festivals and shared bills with LA’s roots rock heroes the Blasters, trad-country torchbearers like BR-549, Dale Watson, and Johnny Dilks, as well as the storied rockabilly revivalists Jason and the Scorchers.
The WCT’s esteemed place is partly the result of its personnel, representing some of the cream of the local music scene. The band includes two of the city’s top music critics, lead vocalist Chris Davis of the Memphis Flyer and former Flyer and current Commercial Appeal critic Mark Jordan (Todd Snider, the Great Indoorsman, Gerry Finney) on drums. Also on board are lead guitarist John Stivers (surf rock favorites Imapala) and John Whittemore (legendary punk band Neighborhood Texture Jam, the Delta Queens) on pedal steel, acoustic, and baritone guitars. Respected multi-instrumentalist Clint Wagner (The Scam, Mash-o-Matic, and Banyan, featuring Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins) plays fiddle and mandolin on the record. Baker Yates (The Internationals) provides bass. Lead female and backing vocals are handled by Faith Wallace whose pure country voice has made her a perennial crowd favorite.
