Details:
Marijn Wijnands wrote her first songs after the birth of her two children, she was 34 years old when she started writing and playing guitar. By that time she had experience as a singer and bass player in several bands for 15 years.
One of those was The Boulevard of Broken Dreams, an Orchestra that traveled all the way to Canada to perform in a huge tent named "the mirror tent". The mirror tent and the orchestra were one of the attractions of the traveling music and Theatre company that had a lot of success in the years 1985- 1987.
In earlier years, after finishing high school Marijn went to the Academy of Arts while at the same time playing bass-guitar and singing in several bands. (the New Wave band Mick Ness and the High School Pop/Girl Group band the Cupcakes, which she formed with a girlfriend)
Immediately after finishing Art School(1987) she went to the (Jazz) Conservatory in Hilversum.
The musical education lasted 5 years.
1990 and 1992, she got two children with Stephan Jankowski, a guitar player she met at the conservatory.
She started writing songs and learning to play guitar from a friend in 1994.
She released her first cd "Stills" in 1998.
Stills was recieved very well by the dutch press, the song "try to remember" was labeled as one of the prettiest songs ever written about the death of a mother.
Wouter Planteijdt and Marijn met shortly after the Stills release and they started to work together, she did some vocals at his albums and they recorded together and that was all very much fun and satisfying and finally Wouter asked Marijn if she would agree if he would make an album with her voice and her songs.
Because there was no pressure and no money it took some years. They recorded in rehearsal rooms, in their own houses and in the KHL, a venue in Amsterdam.
In 2007 this cd was finally ready with money and help from a lot of friends.
Harbour was presented in Paradiso and got a lot of great reviews.
Marijn and band were compared to Sandy Denny, Lucinda Williams , Suzanne Vega and Gilian Welch and the songs are told to be authenthic, pure and deep.
Americana but with a very personal touch." Wijnands sings pure and moving, sweet, but not unworldly, poëtic and powerful in all her reserve." (quote from NRC Handelsblad)
