Count Balthazar
With his ballad Count Balthazar from 1831, Neukomm put another poem by the popular poet Barry Cornwall to music. His expert use of symbolism in sound and the multiple cross references between lyrics and piano part, as well as frequent use of well placed dynamic contrasts showcase Neukomm as a well-versed composer of songs for voice and piano. These were the years the extremely erudite philanthropist spent in England as ambassador of the First Viennese School. His sizeable output as a composer is currently being reappraised, putting a focus on Neukomms role as a precursor to romanticism.
