King Death!
It is assumed that Chevalier Sigismund von Neukomm composed King Death as incidental music to be performed as an encore in a contemporary opera scene, thus fulfilling a contractual clause of the bass-baritone Henry Phillips. Similar ballads were extremely popular with the audience in those days and frequently developed into hits, that ensured the ongoing success of the singer in subsequent solo recitals. As with several of his compositions one is reminded of Neukomms artistic influence under the guidance of Michael and Joseph Haydn.
