Kenny Brown was born in Berkeley, California, but claims as his home both Richmond and also across the tracks in San Pablo. As a child he had an unstable home life, and he moved frequently as a result. In his eighteen years on earth he has lived for periods in Berkeley, San Pablo, Oakland, and finally Richmond, where he lives now. In short, he is a product of the Bay Area.
As a child Kenny wrote poetry to express how he felt about his world, and in time that poetry evolved into raps. When asked how to define himself, though, he says “I’m not a rapper; I’m a game teacher. I got game for sale: a motivational speaker.”
The Brotherhood
Kenny Brown is a cofounder of the Brotherhood, along with fellow recording artist Mike L. The Brotherhood is a group of young Black Brothers from different neighborhoods who get together to have a good time with their music. The point is to show people that young Black men can get along, work together, and most importantly, be their brothers’ keepers. It’s about family.
