Mitchell: Sonata No. 7 for Piano, Opus 117
In the present sonata Op. 117, the Californian composer John Mitchell, like in many of his works for piano solo, was inspired by the mystic energy of outer space. The asteroid Eltanin is the force behind that grand one movement sonata. The giant hit the earth about 2,2 million years ago at the edge of the Bellingshausen Sea, causing a tremendous tsunami and triggering the ice-age. Mitchell transformed that energy into a playful approach to time signatures and tempo. Towards the end the piece displays an increase in intensity and captivates by way of its overwhelmingly final effect.
