Raff: Villanella, Opus 89
In his Villanella Op. 89 Raff created a masterpiece full of pianistic virtuosity, having found himself in a phase of elated creativity by the end of the year 1859. In a way he honored his mentor and employer of the previous years in Weimar, Franz Liszt, who himself was rated as master of virtuoso improvisation. Doubtlessly Raff succeeded in heightening the rustic musical theme. Thus the piece may be appreciated not only as upscale salon music, but as a stepping stone for pianists intent on proving their fleet-footed velocity and light touch.
