In the evolution of the writing of songs, each artist must reckon with the ever present demon of closure: when is a song finished? How polished should it be? Should it remain a Jimi Hedrix style raw expression, or should it get all the buffing out that YES''s "Owner of a Lonely Heart" received? The answer to these questions are never clear. What one calls a spontaneous heart-felt rendering, another calls an untutored, unfinished work-in-progress.
Well, my resolution to such enigmas is my quasi-experimental album entitled, "A Songwriter''s Diary". In it, I have negotiated the two extremes of polished versus raw music with my "Diary" style recordings of some of my large anthology of songs. The renditions on this album are fine the way they are, I believe, but shall find themselves into much more polished versions in the future. They all will eventually become highly worked-out progressive art-rock and rock gems...but for now, I kind of like them as they are now...simply, my diary of song ideas. I hope you see where I am coming from when you enjoy them. Greg
