Mitchell: Sonata No. 5 for Piano, Opus 111
The Sonata No. 5 Op. 111 originated in 2001 and is part of the attractively abundant repertoire the Californian composer John Mitchell conceived for piano solo. First basic ideas were sketched already in 1980 and took the shape of a prelude. Like other piano sonatas created in 2001 this piece was inspired by the mystical energy of the stars. It tells the story of the brightest star of the constellation Taurus, the red giant star Aldebaran, known as one of the brightest phenomena of the night sky. Mitchell creates a vision of the star, that includes lyrical moments, and at times results martial and ominous.
