Mitchell: Sonata No. 2 for Piano, Opus 29
The Sonata no. 2 is classical in style and form. The first movement presents itself in sonata-form with a short coda and a longer lyrical second theme that is repeated after the development section. The second movement has a ternary form and a lyrical setting. Whilst the primary theme is rather subdued, even mournful, the middle section appears more heroic and elated and eventually the first theme returns with a triple note variation accompaniment. It is simple to play and rather slow. The third movement is toccata-like, fast, and was inspired indirectly by the great musical lexicographer Nicolas Slonimsky, back in Mitchells student days at UCLA in 1965.
