Hummel: Tanze fur den Apollo-Saal Nr. 3, Opus 31, Piano Solo
With his Op. 31 Hummel composed another series of dances in the year 1809 that he dedicated to the Apollosaal, the most fascinating amusement hall of Old Vienna, and a popular venue for the enlightened nobility just as for the emerging bourgeoisie. The series features six Minuets and six Deutsche Tänze, each followed by a Trio. The German Dance No 6 is especially remarkable because of the mythological quote of the Cyclops and the subsequent entry of the hurdy-gurdy man. These enjoyable musical miniatures offer an interesting glimpse into the creation history of the classical waltz and the world famous Viennese dance culture. They retain their charm as dance music to the present day.
