Details:
Who are you? A singer/songwriter from Arizona. What do you play? "Southwestern rock and roll", alternative country, blues and a little jazz. Where are you from originally? Atlanta, Ga. I was born in Tucson, AZ. My paternal father was going to the U of A law school when I was born. My mother and father were divorced and she married my dad when I was 4. He was in the radio business and we ended up in the Atlanta when I turned 10. I went to the University of Georgia and then transferred to NAU in Flagstaff, AZ my junior year. I have been in Arizona since except for 10 years I spent in Nashville pursuing a songwriting career and "managing" an artist. I wasn''t a very good manager and I only got a few songs published. Nashville is a very closed and controlled music town. You are either in or you ain''t. And it''s very difficult to get "in". Coupled with the fact I was getting a divorce, it was time to go back to Arizona. I also made the decision I only wanted to write for myself and if other artists somewhere down the road wanted to sing any of my songs, great. Did you graduate? Yeah. I got a degree in journalism but I immediately formed a band. My parents were pleased. They said is this why we spent the money to send you to college. I''m still playing after all these years. However, I did get to use my degree when I got a job as a junior high science teacher. My degree was in writing and now I''m teaching science....go figure. I guess they had no one else to do it. Moral of the story....stay in school...or, have your head examined. If someone told me they aspired to teach junior high kids, I would tell them they were crazy. Definitely the hardest job I''ve ever had...but the most rewarding. I also work for an insurance company inspecting property part time. It''s a great job. I travel around the state taking pictures, camp in the desert or along the Colorado River and write songs at night. And... I get paid for it. Imagine that! What are your musical influences? Growing up in the south I loved all the "soul groups" of the 60''s. Since my dad was in the radio business I got to go to almost every concert I wanted to in Atlanta. And....then came The Beatles and all bets were off. I was 11 years old and I was at a bowling alley and I went and bought the "Meet The Beatles" album. It was 1964 and time stood still. I came home and my dad asked me why I bought the record when he got them all for free at the station. I just had to have the record right then. I got to go see The Beatles with James Brown opening the show at the Atlanta stadium. The girls were screaming so loud I could barely hear. Still today I believe they are the best group to have ever "landed" on this planet. I''m still waiting for the next group of "aliens" to show up. I probably won''t see it in my lifetime. I like alot of music...jazz, country, rock. Old Sinatra songs, Ray Charles, Harry Connick, Jr. If I''m driving down the road I like to listen to jazz. I was blessed to have grown up in the 60''s and 70''s when there was so much great music around. Where do you play? Mainly in Northern Arizona. Places like Sedona and the Verde Valley. We used to play all over the state and probably in the near future we will start traveling again now that the CD is done. There''s a great club in Clarkdale called the 10/12 club where we play at every other month. There are still good clubs in Jerome, Prescott and Flagstaff as well. But overall, the club scene is not like it used to be. With the opening of so many casinos, people are transfixed on slot machines. And to get jobs in the casinos, nobody seems to care alot about the music. It''s just a gig. And...there are cops on every street corner so alot of my old friends are afraid to go out at night. I''ve owned 3 nightclubs over the years where my bands played at but now being in the club business is very risky because of all the laws, etc. What are your main concerns? The war. Global warming. Poverty. We seem to fight all the wrong battles. I wrote a song recently called "The Butterflies Weep" and it basically talks about that. I''m really concerned about the planet our kids are going to inherit. We''ve done a good job of messing it up for them. What are your interests other than music? Fishing. I love to trout fish. I also like to fish in the ocean because you never know what you''re gonna catch. I like to camp in the desert. That''s where I write a lot of my songs. I also like to shoot pool and play golf. Motorcycles and sports cars are also a passion. Tell us about your family? I have a wife of 13 years named Anna. She is very sweet and also a teacher. Our daughter Roxanne is just graduating from Arizona State University and wants to have a career in the resort/travel industry. She is a natural for that type of career. I also have 2 children, Ariel and Maxwell from my previous marriage to Alexis. Ariel is 19 and going to the University of Arizona and wants to be a photo journalist. She took the photo on the back cover on my CD. She has the tenaciousness to do well in anything. Max is 16 and the other musician in the family. He''s getting into people like Jack Johnson, writing rock and reggae. He is tremendously talented. I just told him the music business ain''t easy so get an education along the way. My dad lives in Atlanta with his wife, Dot. He has been retired from the radio business for about 20 years. My mother lives in Nogales, Arizona. She helps me with the bookkeeping of a small manufacturing business that I''m partners in. My studio is located in the basement of her 1900''s era home. She has been a great role model in my life. She taught me work ethic. "Never give in, never give out and never give up". Maybe that''s why I''m still in pursuit of my music career after all these years. It has certainly been a "labor of love". My older brother Bob lives in Jaishan, China. He married a Chinese girl and sells saxophones on the internet. My brother Gary is in the mortgage business in Atlanta. He just turned 50 I''d like to add. My younger brother Ron is a club golf pro in Lake Tahoe and he also teaches snow skiing in the winter. Talk about living the "charmed life". I envy him. Oh, did I mention he also plays guitar in a band. What are your aspirations? I''ve been writing for 30+ years and I just want to be able to catalogue all of the songs I deem worthy of recording. I''d like to do another CD similar to the "Mañanaland" CD within the next two years and then work on a project with Tom Waterfield, my singing partner in our group "Toucan Eddy", a band from Sedona, AZ. He is great singer/songwriter and we have several ballad and "smooth jazz" tunes we can record. It would be very different than this CD. I''d also like to record one "eclectic" country CD, kinda left field, odd-ball and some R-rated songs. I''ve got a few of those up my sleeve. Just for the hell of it. And who knows what I''ll keep writing down the road. The songs keep coming, fortunately. And basically I''ll keep playing and promoting my music and see where the chips may fall, as they say. Hopefully I''ll hit a lick with one of these tunes and get to do some serious touring. I''ve got great musicians to back me up. I just need a break like the thousand of other "indie" artists out there. And, hopefully if the junior high kids don''t give me a stroke or coronary, I''ll keep following my dream to wherever if may take me. It''s all good. Peace and Love....BC
