Sensing the need to get young adults involved in the work of the church, the Reverend W.N. McKinney’s dream to reflect the experience and perception of the spirit of God through gospel songs became a reality. Under the direction of Mrs. Mattie Jones, the choir was organized in January of 1977 at Jacob Chapel Baptist Church.
The choir’s first engagement was in March of 1977, for the “Finer Womanhood “ program sponsored by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. It was after this engagement that the group decided unanimously to be called the W.N. McKinney Gospel Choir.
The first pianist, Mrs. Regina Godwin, had a great influence on the choir’s success. After two years, she was succeeded by Miss Vivian Shepherd, who proved herself to be equally competent and dedicated to the success of the group. She served as musician for twelve years. After being without a musician for a short period of time, the Lord blessed the choir with another excellent musician, directress and songster, Ms. Karen L. Rushing.
Under the direction of Ms. Rushing, the choir has continued to grow. The choir has traveled from Tallahassee to Miami and crossed the state line to Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi lifting up the Lord’s name in song and praise. McKinney has humbly taken the spotlight at the Orlando House of Blues Gospel Brunch.
It is evident that God has placed a special anointing on this choir
