Details:
Making Waves is a collection of original and favourite songs, several with a nautical theme, reflecting Andy’s lifelong passion for the sea and sailing.
In addition to Andy’s voice, guitar and flute, the album also features some fine playing by fiddler Rosalie Carver, acoustic bass by Paul Bergman, djembe by Liam McKenzie, Myles Bigelow''s percussion work and Andy’s partner, Danielle Arcand, who provides vocal harmonies.
Born in Swansea, Wales, in 1944 Andy Vine began singing in the folk clubs of Merseyside in northern England where he grew up. These days, Andy lives in Vancouver, Canada and is still singing, playing and writing protest songs about global warming (Excuse Me Your Planet Is Burning) , the war in Iraq (Duped) and the troubled state of our world (New American Century).
About his lifelong passion for folk music, Andy says, “I guess it’s because these songs tell the truth. They are not neutered for market acceptability or political correctness. This gives them a unique vitality and beauty.”
One of Andy’s compositions, “Woman Of Labrador” was recorded by the seminal east coast group Figgy Duff. Thanks to that exposure, the song is widely known throughout the maritime provinces. It has also been used by a number of school teachers in Canadian history classes. There has even been a dance piece based on the song. Recently, Woman Of Labrador was chosen as one of 50 best loved songs for The Great Canadian Song Book, Vol 1.
A keen sailor, Andy’s love of the sea is reflected in the CD title, “Making Waves”, as well as in the choice of songs which includes his own musical setting of John Masefield’s famous poem “Sea Fever”. Incidentally, the striking cover photo was taken by Andy while sailing on his boat “Gwyneth” in Desolation Sound, north of Vancouver.
Now in his sixties, Andy continues to sing and play in clubs and pubs around Vancouver. He has also performed at The Islands Folk Festival, CityFest, Seattle’s Folklife, Festival du bois, The Wooden Boat Festival and more.
