From Red Dirt to the Rio Grande and points far beyond, Shawna Russell has made music her life. Her sound reflects a lifetime of influence from a family with deep musical roots, a decade of touring the world, and a voice that was meant to be heard.
And after three years touring the world with Ty England, she is back on her own, touring to promote her upcoming album.
Music has been a part of Shawna Russell''s life and destiny since the beginning. Her dad and uncles on both sides of the family have been involved in successful country bands for over 30 years.
Some of Shawna’s first memories are of going to rehearsals and following her dad’s bands around Oklahoma. At seven, at the urging of a family member, Shawna sang at her first public appearance, a church Christmas program in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, and the rest is history.
Her first paid performances were singing the National Anthem at campaign events for an Oklahoma gubernatorial candidate. After the election, Shawna and her father, Keith, traveled the Oklahoma countryside playing for “anyone who would listen” from Christmas parties to farm gatherings.
The experience paid off when a Nashville agent listened to Shawna perform four years later. The agent said at the time that Shawna “had everything that it takes to be a superstar. So she joined forces with her uncle’s already successful regional band, "Way Out West", to play full time on the A club circuit.
Eleven years later, Shawna has seen the world through the windshield. She has performed from Nashville to Las Vegas and from Dallas to Calgary, Canada and all points in between. The first tour on the road took her out 78 weeks straight with out a week off.
An accomplished guitarist, Shawna carries her weight on stage, playing acoustic rhythm and lead guitar and also playing saxophone from time to time.
Shawna’s musical inspiration comes from a wide and diverse background. Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crowe, Stevie Nicks, and country acts like Trisha Yearwood, and Martina McBride, have all flavored her style. However the most unique thing about her style is that it is her own. She is capable of taking each tune and "wringing it out" so that her own vocal style can shine through. The Dallas-based “Terry Awards” has named Shawna Female Vocalist of the Year in the Metroplex.
Her new album "Goddess" reflects a polished sound and a pure dedication to music, Shawna Russell is looking ahead with an eye on the grandest stage and a sound meant for any ear that will listen.
