Details:
Claudia Appling Williams, the rose in Montana Rose, deftly plays Patsy in “Dear Patsy”, and though her voice holds none of the truck stop throatiness of Cline’s, she interprets standards such as “Walking after Midnight,” ”I Fall to Pieces,” “ Sweet Dreams” and others with an erotic tenderness that’s less country than it is late-night hip. Kenny Williams ditches the strings and Jordanaire-style back-ups of Owen Bradley’s productions in favor of Claudia’s vocal pyrotechnics and Rick Winking’s multi-layered guitar work, which runs the gamut from rockabilly to Reinhardt to roadhouse swing.
Montana Rose has given us a classic. One could not ask for a finer tribute to Cline’s memory or to Montana Rose’s ever-expanding legacy.
