Somewhere amid the suburban sprawl of southern New Jersey, Blank Pages has been brewing its tasty concoction of guitar-driven power pop from more than a decade. With the release of On My Street, their new album on the FDR Label, the band continues the tradition of churning out pop hooks that get into your head and won’t come out.
While Blank Pages’ powerful pop exudes the hooks and harmonies of classic pop acts like XTC and Wings, On My Street updates their sound and draws inspiration from modern purveyors of indie-pop like Jason Falkner and Sloan. The group features songwriter and guitarist Greg Potter, drummer Ed McCaffrey, guitarist Jason Brown and bassist Wayne Philipp.
On My Street’s well-crafted tracks are connected by Potter’s perspective of growing up in the Garden State and offer intimate snapshots of his life and the region. The title track provides an anthem for the unsung heroes who never strayed far from his neighborhood. While the closing track, ‘This is Where I’m From,’ mourns the state’s diminishing farmland being slowly overtaken by creeping suburbia.
On My Street is Blank Pages’ third release on the FDR Label, the home of several acclaimed New Jersey indie-pop bands like the Dipsomaniacs and the Successful Failures. Blank Pages contributed to all the label’s renowned compilations, including the latest installment, About a Girl. The CD features indie pop artists covering tunes with girls’ names in their titles.
The band’s unique style of power pop is inspired by such bands as Badfinger, Beach Boys, Beatles, Big Star, Byrds, Cheap Trick, Elvis Costello, Electric Light Orchestra, Jason Falkner, Jellyfish, Kinks, Knack, Paul McCartney and Wings, Matthew Sweet, Monkees, Pearlfishers, Police, Raspberries, Sloan, Superdrag, Velvet Crush, XTC, and the Who.
