Who the *$#!! is Dick Smith? Well, they''re 3 fellers from the Chicago region who play a greasy, swampy, acoustic roots style o'' music, yessiree. The core of the band is Dave Nelson on Dobro and various other reso-guitars, jawharp, harmonica and chortlin''. He also plays with country-rock pioneers Heartsfield. Dave Ramont vocalizes and plays banjo, concertina and jug. He''s also a nationally touring solo artist who''s released 3 CDs. Mr. Bob Kuhn sings and plays mandolin and mandola. He has a dog named Daisy. And they all pass the ol'' guitar around like a smooth pint of Kesslers.
They''ve released 2 CDs-"Swill" and "Smoke Damage"- the latter coming out in December 2002. They''ve recieved airplay on public and college radio all around the US and in Europe too. Their songs and live shows have garnered excellent reviews from DJs, critics, drunks and drunken critics. Amanda Fisher of Rambles (a cultural arts magazine) said "If you''re intrigued by the sound of very alternative, rootsy bluegrass and country, look no further. It''s a strange but infectious mix, heavily influenced by rock and even some punk sensibilities."
And they stir some other notable Chicago area players into the sticky stew:Gerald Dowd on percussion, Scott Stevenson on accordion, Christopher Walke on lap steel, Randy Henry on upright bass, and Tom Jancauskas on electric bass. Between ''em these boys have played with the likes of Robbie Fulks, Jon Langford, Mabel Mabel, Chris Mills, Peter Himmelmann and on and on.
