Rene Ferland was born in Duck Bay, Manitoba in 1933. He started playing fiddle when he was fifteen and learned from his father, John Ferland. He listened to favorite fiddle players like Andy Desjarlias and Don Messer. He played at parties, weddings and talent shows and then in 1986 he featured on a Metis fiddle compilation called '' Old Native and Metis Fiddling in Western Manitoba'' which was sold by the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Manitoba and produced by Falcon Productions. By 1996 Rene had his first album out called '' Road Number 20'' and then did a second one two years later entitled ''Mary''s Reel''. Rene died suddenly in 2000 two weeks before he was to appear on a CBC Radio interview.
