There’s no need to rush through this recording: relax, turn down the lights, help yourself to some appropriate refreshments, in the company of good friends or someone special, and let Mike’s sax soothe your soul.

For two hours each week, I have the privilege of enjoying an inspired collection of jazz selected by Mike Laatz for his Fine Music Radio programme – and now there’s “Sentimental Journey”, an hour-and-a-quarter of inspired playing by Laatz. From a sultry “Misty” to a jump-bop “Summer Samba” it’s a smoky ride, with the 4am paean of “Ntyilo Ntyilo” a highlight – and the mashed ‘taters original is a rollicking inclusion.

It’s been a privilege to work with the wonderful musicians on this album. Andrew, Basil and Kevin are, in my book, the finest rhythm section in the country. A special thanks to Jack van Poll, who usually only plays with the best, for his tenor sax on “Misty”. Thanks also to Cecily Pepler for her wonderful interpretation of my “Mashed Potatoes”, and to Craig and Andrew for their superb recording skills. Finally, thanks to you if you have bought this album; I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.
