Details:
Don helped form his first band when he was 15, playing electric piano & organ. That was nearly 4 decades ago. Keyboard/synths were still a few years away! It was just a good ol’ rock and roll band, but over the course of several years the band had measurable success in their home circuit of south central Pennsylvania. After the band dissolved, Don picked up an acoustic guitar, & his music drifted to the folk scene -Tom Rush, Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, etc. Then something new happened: the Singer/Songwriter movement emerged, and artists like Steve Noonan, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne caught Don’s attention with a new, undefined sound. This new instrumental album - NORTH - is the result of a long time love affair with the piano, and the many influences that define Don''s style.
A few of the pieces here were on the previous albums “Gate On Red Hill” and “Never Really There”. Of those, some were instrumental and some were vocal; the vocal versions have been re-recorded as instrumentals, and all were included on “NORTH” simply because they’re good songs, and belong here.
Lastly, a brief note about the title, “NORTH”: Don is originally from Lancaster County, PA, but has lived lo these many years in Maryland. The goal has always been to return to his beloved Pennsylvania – North.
