Ben Pancy got his start in music at the age of six, when he began taking piano lessons and singing in the children’s choir at his local church. He began teaching himself to play the guitar in high school. He joined a local garage band as a drummer and quickly took up songwriting duties.
Following the break up of the band a month later, Pancy began writing as a solo artist and released a self-recorded EP in the summer of 2005. His first full length album, “Something More Comfortable” was released in the spring of 2006 and featured Pancy’s voice over his borrowed acoustic guitar. It received minimal airplay on local radio stations.
“I’ve always hated that album,” Pancy said of “Something More Comfortable”. “We recorded it in about an hour. That was all the time we could afford. Almost everything was done in one take, and there’s no drums, no accompaniment, nothing.”
Ben Pancy, now a student in Electrical Engineering at Michigan Tech, began work on his latest album before “Something More Comfortable” was even finished. He assembled a small recording area in his basement, and recorded the music for “Hello Blue Sky” over a period of five months.
“Hello Blue Sky” features a full band behind Pancy’s cutting vocals, but every note on the album was played by him.
“I knew what I wanted [the music] to sound like, and I didn’t want to have to teach it to other people. Besides, I don’t have enough space to record all the parts all at the same time.”
Pancy is starting his third year at Michigan Tech in the fall, and says he is already writing music for another album.
