Details:
Such elation, such joy.

Those were the surging emotions felt by a then 10-year-old Rosli Mansor when he laid hands on his first guitar in 1979. The extraordinary moment happened when Rosli’s older brother passed him his acoustic guitar and guitar chord book. There has been no looking back for his fingers since.

An early exposure to the likes of the Carpenters, the Beatles, Scorpions, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep cultivated and fuelled his passion for guitar and rock music. Armed with that same passion and doggedness, a young Rosli taught himself how to play the instrument and rock music through the songs he heard. As a schoolboy, he delivered newspapers in the wee hours of the morning and cut papers for a print shop after school, all done in hopes of owning his first electric guitar. Together with some cash from his late mother, his wish came true on his 15th birthday; also the day he set his mind to be a musician for life. He continued to juggle two ends until his late teens: his work as a display artist and as a young performer at gigs.

Rosli started exploring (English and Mandarin) pop and jazz music later on, stemmed from his early belief of not confining himself to one music genre. Gigs, weddings and the local watering holes became his ‘teacher’ and ‘classroom’. He adapted his playing style from that of a guitarist to that of an all-rounder in the bands he played with. His deft hands coaxed sounds of the piano, bass and other stringed and wind instruments out of his Godin Midi guitar to create a fuller and surreal soundscape.

Over the years, Rosli has had opportunities to work with or alongside several well-known local names such as Kick!, Ramli Sarip, Flower Child, Tanya Chua, Evelyn Tan, Fuzed, Trisno Ishak of the now-defunct group Urban Xchange, etc. Together with local act Boja Vibe, they released a rock album in 1995.

Wading into the deeper waters of music, he ventured into composing and arranging music. In 1997, local filmmaker Wee Li Lin approached Rosli to help compose and arrange soundtracks for her short films and his work can be heard on “Norman On The Air”, “Autograph Book” and “Lunchtime”. His encounter with local theatre, albeit brief, was when he wrote a song titled “Dosa” (Sins) for the play Di Bawah Lindungan Kaabah, staged by Theatrework’s Perkumpulan Seni.

Rosli’s repertoire grew further with him being the assistant producer and sound engineer for the locally released Muzik Tarian Melayu Tradisional (Muzika Entertainment), a CD compilation of traditional Malay songs.

Together with his experience as a studio session player for Form Studio, Jamm Studio, Snoots Music, Zaq Productions, Iqraq Records, Gnuka Studio and Room354, Rosli built up his credibility over the years as a much sought-after and accomplished musician.

The year 1990 marked the start of Rosli’s unofficial ‘propaganda’: to spread his knowledge and love for music through teaching as a private instructor and as a Yamaha Music School instructor, both of which he is still involved today.

When not being holed up in the box-like classroom or busy creating music in studios, he can be found in some coffee shop blissfully enjoying his favourite teh tarik, playing with his pet cats or helping to find a home for stray animals. Occasionally, one can try to mob him on his two-wheels in along the beaches.
