Biography
In early-1970’s Memphis, five-year-old Kennen Brooks could be found sitting on the back step of his
parent’s home, singing along with every song on the radio. He recalled, “I’d use a broom stick as a microphone and put myself in the shoes of the artist. I remember how good it made me feel.”
Years later he traded in the broomstick for a real microphone and the step for a stage,
performing at popular local venues.
Kennen started out as a soloist, singing regularly at a Memphis club where he frequently won a competitive weekly singing contest. It was there that he met Sherman Guy of Bar-Kays fame. Along with his cousin Robert Clayborne, Kennen and Sherman would later form the group “3 For You”. Kennen went on to perform regularly at the city’s top venues, in addition to gigs in California, Mississippi and Arkansas. Kennen also auditioned for Star Search, the televised singing competition, and was selected as Memphis’ alternate in the male R&B category.
Kennen’s love of the stage led him to perform for the Memphis Operatic Society and Memphis Symphony Choir, and to sing and act in notable theatrical productions including “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “The Other Side of Soul.” Over the years Kennen has appeared on stage with an impressive list of GRAMMY Award winners and nominees including James Cleveland, The Williams Brothers, Canton Spirituals, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and Wayman Tisdale.
With his sensuous baritone voice and spellbinding stage presence, Kennen quickly built a small but loyal following. In 1996, he captivated Joy Stephens during a performance at Memphis Sounds. The two developed a dynamic friendship that survived Stephens’ departure from Memphis two years later. “Revealed,” Kennen’s debut album, is the result of that bond; Stephens spearheaded the project and served as Executive Producer.
Kennen’s musical inspiration stems from a line-up of legendary balladeers and baritones,
including Larry Graham, Barry White, Jeffrey Osborne, Teddy Pendergrass, and James Ingram.
Similar depth and richness can be found in Kennen’s vocals, with the album’s eclectic mix of songs
showcasing his unique ability to evoke seduction and soulfulness.
This recording is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Kennen, one that has required much
personal sacrifice. For years, the hardworking, single father has held three demanding jobs
in high-level personal and corporate security in order to provide the best possible life to his
three sons. Kennen has said, “Music became my passion because it helped me through life’s
ups and downs.” This heartfelt CD represents his journey.
