FOLK: Alternative Folk, WORLD: Eastern European
Details:
An exuberant instrumental trio with roots in medieval and traditional folk. Drawing influence from English, French medieval and European folk styles Horses Brawl explore unconventional techniques on modern and ancient instruments to create an intense and original style.
Horses Brawl have been hailed as one of the brightest young bands around.
Horses Brawl formed in 2003 for a Creative Arts East tour to perform formal Elizabethan dance music, but very quickly they discovered their own rich new sound, which incorporates semi-improvised arrangements of early and folk music from Eastern and Western Europe. The trio explore unconventional techniques on their instruments producing a fascinating sound that has been described as: ‘Vibrant, engaging and completely spell-binding’ (Steafan Hannigan) and, ‘An Early music group to keep an eye on’ (Verity Sharp BBC Radio 3). In 2005 Horses Brawl released their debut album to great acclaim, and have received airplay on BBC Radio 3, Resonance FM and appeared as editors picks in both The Guardian Guide and The Independent.
Previous performances include:
The National Portrait Gallery, The King of Hearts, Norwich, The Spitz, The Troubador Club, The British Museum, The Thames Festival, The Northern Aldborough Festival, The Little Missenden Festival, The Assembly House, Norwich, ''Folk in the Fall'' at Queen Elizabeth Hall.
REVIEWS
Horses Brawl reached the Top Ten playlist for fROOTs in March 2006 and you can find a review of the album in SONGLINES June 2006 edition.
"Horses Brawl were my highlight of the day...... They sounded like a mix of Australia''s Dirty Three and the chamber band Telegraph Melts, which, if you haven''t heard either, is high praise indeed. They''re also the only band since The Go! Team to make the recorder sound cool and that''s no easy task."
Michael Saunders BBC Norfolk Blast reporter at BBC COAST
"Pure delight, such sounds as you have never heard before. A sweet and unusual mixture of instruments, often played in an unconventional manner. Don''t miss Horses Brawl if you get a chance to see them perform"
